Find your True North

Image
There was no GPS in1991 when I joined shipping .   I learned navigation using heavenly bodies such as the stars, the sun, the moon & the planets.   We used a sextant , which allowed us to measure angles and altitudes, and then we managed to perform complex manual calculations to arrive at the ship’s position which was fairly accurate, sometimes within 5 meters off the actual position!   With automated position systems developed we start using SatNav (Satellite Navigation) to the current GPS and lost the significance of stars. Where there were   6000+ stars visible to the naked eye but only 58 stars are bright enough to be used for navigation. Even when I quit sailing I forgot some of them still I can identify the main ones on a clear night. One such star is the Pole Star, also known as Polaris or North Star.   You must have heard these phrases a lot, especially used by leadership coaches :   “ Find your Pole Star ” or   “ Find your...

Why is your business not growing?

Image
Admittedly, last year has been perhaps the most challenging time we have ever seen for businesses. For some businesses, success means survival, but for others, it is growth. Do you have strong and decisive leadership at the helm to lead in times of uncertainty? Do your leaders have complete clarity and confidence in what they should be doing next? So here are some potential areas where the leadership team of your business could be struggling and not growing Prisoners of the past Many leaders are still following the old hierarchical mindset and are not able to shift from their old way of working. This limits their creative thinking ability for fresh concepts with individual perspectives. This becomes the bigger hindrance for your team and business growth. Behind this resistance to change is fear – fear of failure, fear of commitment and fear of the unknown. This resistance to change is and will continue to impact the growth of teams and their businesses in the future. Lac...

Leadership Coaching and Scuba Diving

Image
Imagine a shallow waterscuba diving instructor takes his students for their final diving class. He dives with the group under deep water. Now, students want to test the limit by going deep er and the instructor faces the dilemma of whether to take them deeper or not even if students are pursuing to take the chance. Still, the instructor doesn't allow them to dive further deeper because he hasn't tested the depth and doesn't know about the water pressure and oxygen there A great leader always mentors the team to grow and succeed. However, real transformation happens only when the leader coaches to shift mindsets, beliefs, thinking patterns. This is a very important distinction in leadership coaching Thus, you cannot become a good leader or coach if you are not mentored coached powerfully enough. To become a powerful coach for your team, first get coached first, explore yourself and discover yourself then help others discover themselves

Ice Navigation

Image
My first encounter with ice navigation was in the winter of 1998. My ship was sailing around the coast of Newfoundland, heading towards Montreal, Canada. During winters, the warm ocean water freezes into solid ice in colder regions,  sometimes as thick as 1-2 meters !! This thick ice creates resistance and pressure against the ship’s movement and ships have to cut through this solid ice and force their way to move ahead. Outside air temperature drops below zero degrees, and if there is wind blowing, it creates something called  wind chill  (I recollect the lowest temperature I have experienced was around -40 deg C including wind chill!!) Navigating in such conditions is not easy, but it’s a surreal experience for sure!

Seven strategies to build your own personal brand at the workplace

Image
In today’s competitive corporate environment , it is no longer enough to do your job well; that is, in fact, the minimum expectation from any employer. Being good at what you do does not guarantee success, and every working professional needs to build their personal brand at the workplace. It’s not about image makeover or physical appearance; there is merit in that as well, but your brand must go beyond how you appear.   The term brand is synonymous with trust, quality, and loyalty. It is also associated with awareness and perception. That’s true for our personal brand as well. However, there is one more concept of traditional corporate brand equity that can be applied to personal brands as well. “Recall Value” – what do people associate you with and remember you for, when you are not in the room. When do people think of you? What are you known for beyond your core functional responsibilities?

Turning a ship and Change Management

Image
One of the biggestships I commanded as a Captain was a container ship , which was 300 meters long and 50 meters wide.   When the ship enters a small port, all operations would stop to allow her entry like a royal welcome. While large ships are a great pride to command but are not so easy to control & maneuver. To control the ship you need to understand the ship’s behavior and her feel in the water. It is more complicated for big ships to turn. … It needs a powerful engine & rudder movement to initiate the turn. ..Then learn how to encounter or maintain lateral resistance from water and wind. ..As you apply the counter and the lateral resistance reduces, the ship starts gaining momentum and turns rapidly. After learning about the momentum you need to lose counter & control the momentum, so the ship doesn’t overshoot its turn. If you don’t, it will end up going somewhere else! .As a leader, you need to be fully aware of the feel of the organization. Thus, yo...

Life and management lessons from the world of ART

Image
There must be a point in our childhood which carried vivid and messier imagination with colors that expressed or defined us freely without any hesitation or rules or styles. Then what made us apart from colors as we grew up? Why did become more conscious about every move we make and what others would say? My journey with art began with my elder son showing interest in drawing and we enrolled him into weekend art classes. His teacher was a reputed artist with an innate ability to connect with kids and help them discover the artist within themselves. Given to the curiosity, I walked into my son's class while dropping my son off to his art classes, and to my surprise that the class was a milieu of people across the age spectrum at different stages of learning. So here are some musings from the world of art which I enrolled to spend time to and how they have changed the way I look at life : Finding the problem– We are rising as solution-oriented instead of looking for the sourc...
