Find your True North

Image
There was no GPS in1991 when I joined shipping .   I learned navigation using heavenly bodies such as the stars, the sun, the moon & the planets.   We used a sextant , which allowed us to measure angles and altitudes, and then we managed to perform complex manual calculations to arrive at the ship’s position which was fairly accurate, sometimes within 5 meters off the actual position!   With automated position systems developed we start using SatNav (Satellite Navigation) to the current GPS and lost the significance of stars. Where there were   6000+ stars visible to the naked eye but only 58 stars are bright enough to be used for navigation. Even when I quit sailing I forgot some of them still I can identify the main ones on a clear night. One such star is the Pole Star, also known as Polaris or North Star.   You must have heard these phrases a lot, especially used by leadership coaches :   “ Find your Pole Star ” or   “ Find your...

Life and management lessons from the world of ART

Image
There must be a point in our childhood which carried vivid and messier imagination with colors that expressed or defined us freely without any hesitation or rules or styles. Then what made us apart from colors as we grew up? Why did become more conscious about every move we make and what others would say? My journey with art began with my elder son showing interest in drawing and we enrolled him into weekend art classes. His teacher was a reputed artist with an innate ability to connect with kids and help them discover the artist within themselves. Given to the curiosity, I walked into my son's class while dropping my son off to his art classes, and to my surprise that the class was a milieu of people across the age spectrum at different stages of learning. So here are some musings from the world of art which I enrolled to spend time to and how they have changed the way I look at life : Finding the problem– We are rising as solution-oriented instead of looking for the source ...

Be authentic and genuine Be clear on your intention.  If at the end of the day, you are just looking for process output and business results and don’t really care about people, it will not work.  But if you want to trust your team members because you really want to build strong relationships with them, you really want to help and support them, you really believe that your success is linked to their success, then you have a really good chance to build a high performing team who trust and respect each other. Business results will follow  Be clear about your intention   Be vulnerable It all starts with you. You open up and the world will start opening up to you. Ofcourse, this is easier said than done. It needs courage and goes back to true intent. Behind that façade of a strong and powerful leader, you are ultimately human. You make mistakes, you feel hurt, you struggle. Admitting your mistakes, acknowledging your feelings and emotions is not easy. You expose yo...

Find your True North | Best Leadership Coach In India

When I joined shipping in 1991, there was no GPS during those days.   I had to learn to navigate the ship using heavenly bodies such as the stars, the sun, the moon & the planets.   We used an instrument called the  sextant , which allowed us to measure angles and altitudes, and then we would perform complex manual calculations to arrive at the ship’s position.   With enough practice, one could get the calculated position to be fairly accurate, sometimes within 5 metres off the actual position !   Overtime, many automated position systems developed, starting with SatNav ( Satellite Navigation ) to the current GPS.     Navigating the ship using the stars lost its significance and became a dying art, to say the least :(   Now there are 6000+ stars visible to the naked eye under good conditions, but only  58 stars  are bright enough to be used for navigation.   There was a time when I could easily identify all these st...

How do you stop a ship?

Image
During my sailing days, I worked on different kinds of ships where I learned the stopping a ship can be a crucial task as they don’t have wheels or brakes like a car or a bike. Ships have the main engine which controls the propeller located in the rear end of a ship which provides a thrust and propels the ship ahead of time on turning. So you need to stop them from ship   First, you need to cut off the fuel supply to the main engine, even then the propeller continues to move due to the momentum in water which makes the ship move ahead   Eventually, it stops after covering some distance, called the stopping distance. Every ship possesses a unique stopping distance, ranging from 1-3 nautical miles!! As a Captain, I had to know the stopping distance of my ship very well, else I ran the risk of not being able to stop the ship in time and at the right point.   Why am I telling you this?   A good leader must know when to start new things als...

Turning a ship and Change Management

Image
One of the biggestships I commanded as a Captain was a container ship , which was 300 meters long and 50 meters wide.   When the ship enters a small port, all operations would stop to allow her entry like a royal welcome. While large ships are a great pride to command but are not so easy to control & maneuver. To control the ship you need to understand the ship’s behavior and her feel in the water. It is more complicated for big ships to turn. … It needs a powerful engine & rudder movement to initiate the turn. ..Then learn how to encounter or maintain lateral resistance from water and wind. ..As you apply the counter and the lateral resistance reduces, the ship starts gaining momentum and turns rapidly. After learning about the momentum you need to lose counter & control the momentum, so the ship doesn’t overshoot its turn. If you don’t, it will end up going somewhere else! .As a leader, you need to be fully aware of the feel of the organization. T...
