Are you a Super Information Consumer?

Image
There is no denying that today, we have greater access to information than ever before Everything is available to you at your fingertips, at the click of a button or a tap on your phone screen And there is also no denying that this has created what is usually referred to as “information overload” But let me ask you this : While it is easy to say that we are bombarded with information all around, we always have a choice, right? How much information to consume? When and from where? How to use it? Despite having that freedom and choice, I have seen that most of us fall into what I call the “Super Information Consumer” trap This is a term I had coined last year A Super Information Consumer is a person who constantly consumes information all the time, from all possible sources ..You watch a lot of motivational videos ..You read a lot of books ..You attend every possible webinar ..You undergo multiple online pieces of training ..You listen to a lot of podcasts Obviously, nothing wrong ...

Leadership and building trust

Sometime back, I was in a coaching call with a client He is a senior director with a tech company and had recently taken over a new role and a new team “I feel that I am not able to connect with my new team effectively,” he said “especially since many of my team members are still working remotely” “Tell me more” I probed him “Well, I have to constantly check on them as I am not sure what they are doing,” he said “So it appears that I am micromanaging the team, which is obviously not my intent” “How is this impacting you?” I asked “The overall performance and productivity of the team is getting impacted” he continued This might seem like a common scenario to you, right? Remote working has created its own challenges in terms of people management and every leader, every organization is trying to figure out the best way to manage teams remotely And it is easy to attribute lack of connectivity or rapport with teams to remote working as a single cause But there is a more fundamental issue he...

Are you a small fish in a big pond ??

Sometime back, I had an interesting coaching conversation with a prospective client He is a very senior executive in a large multinational company He has had a fantastic run so far – fast track promotions, global assignments, potential C-suite role coming up But now.... He was getting a bit restless and feeling frustrated He said “ This company is so huge and in the current organizational setup, I do not think I have enough decision-making authority” I asked him  “How does this impact you?” “I feel that I am not giving my best”  he added further  "I feel restricted" “Sometimes, I feel that I am a small fish in a big pond”  he continued Now this is not uncommon…. It is typical leadership paradox in large, complex global organizational setup As you grow more senior and climb up the corporate ladder, at some point, you realize that  you are just one amongst many leaders You are part of a very large ecosystem, where despite being a senior leader,  you do not ha...

The ONE thing which changes EVERYTHING....

I  recently stumbled upon an interesting article on gym membership in the US As per that article,  63%  of gym memberships in US go completely unused 82%  of gym members go to the gym less than once per week 22%  completely stop going six months into their membership These numbers were pre-covid and I am sure that statistics would be very similar across the globe Similar stats exist in another area – online courses Completion rates for online courses vary between  5%-15% Why does this happen ? Why do people sign-up for gym membership with such fanfare in the beginning of the year and then drop out ? Why do people buy online courses with an intent to learn but never complete the course ? One big reason why this happens is…. Lack of Commitment As per French language, the "commitment" originated from the word “ commettement ”, which meant  "the pledging or engaging of oneself, a pledge, a promise" But I will add another element to this definition –...

Why is your business not growing?

Image
Admittedly, last 18 months or so have been perhaps the mostly challenging times we have ever seen. Businesses have struggled to stay afloat and survive. For some businesses, success might still be about survival, but for others, it is time to think about growth.  The end is no where in sight, so what next ? While we all are aware of the external environment, are there internal reasons why your business is not growing ? Do you have a strong and decisive leadership at the helm to lead in times of uncertainty ? Do leaders have complete clarity and confidence in what they should be doing next ? Maybe yes, maybe no ? So here are some potential areas where your leadership team could be struggling and that could be one of the many reasons why your business is not growing Prisoners of the past Many leaders are still caught in the old hierarchical mindset and are not able to move away from their past and the old way of working. This limits their ability to think new and afr...

Your dark side as a leader

Image
Superman v/s Injustice Superman Wolverine v/s Old Man Logan Spiderman v/s Black Symbiote Spiderman Every superhero has a dark side, a darker version…. And so do we – you, me, all of us We all have our dark sides Each one of us values different things in life Each one of us has our unique strengths, our unique gifts But are you aware of their dark sides? When your strengths, your values become too strong, too dominant… You “unconsciously” cross the tipping point The keyword is unconscious – you may not be aware of this happening  Let me give you some examples  Let’s say you value “hard work” a lot It has been the reason for your success in life Beyond a certain point, there is a dark side to hard work… You may ignore your own self-care & wellbeing You may confuse hard work v/s smart work You will expect everyone around you to work equally hard. As a leader, you will set unrealistic expectations for your teams You may use hard work as a de...
